On October 1st 1962, two brothers, Herman and Gerry Schinkel, purchased an old meat market in Essex Ont. They renovated and called it Schinkels' Meat Market.

Over a 23 year span, the brothers business excelled.

In 1985 Herman gave up his partnership with his brother, and opened another Schinkels' Meat Market located in Chatham.

Herman began what is now known as Schinkels' Gourmet Meats. The store was an instant success. Herman, his wife Tena, and family ran the store until the year 2000 when Herman and Tena retired, and their son John Schinkel took full ownership.

John made some changes, and still runs his business on quality and service as Schinkels' Gourmet Meats for over 20 years.
